IVF + Donor Sperm
What is IVF + Donor Sperm?
In vitro fertilisation consists of fertilising the ovum with spermatozoa in the laboratory. It is a complex treatment requiring our medical team to work closely with the laboratory.
In this case, the woman’s ovaries are stimulated to obtain the ova, and these are then fertilised in vitro in the laboratory with previously selected donor sperm to obtain the embryo which will then be transferred to the uterus.

Consult our specialists
Before starting in vitro fertilisation treatment, a personalised individual study of the couple is necessary. The basic tests performed during this consultation are:
- Ultrasound scan to confirm that the uterus and ovaries are in suitable condition to begin treatment.
- Ovarian reserve testing through analysis of the anti-Mullerian hormone, estradiol and FSH hormone,
plus an ultrasound antral follicle count.
- Testing for infectious diseases.
However, our specialist medical team may decide more tests are necessary.
During the first visit we will analyse phenotypic traits in order to select a sperm donor.
Starting Treatment
Once we have the results of all the tests, treatment can begin. The first stage consists of ovarian stimulation. This is done by administering gonadotropins, beginning in the first three days of menstruation.
This medication provides a controlled stimulation of the ovaries. About 5 days after stimulation begins, medication with GnRH antagonists is added, which controls the ovarian stimulation and enables a better response to the gonadotropins, as well as avoiding an LH spike to stop ovulation.
This medication must be taken daily.
Approximately every 48 hours, ultrasound scans will be performed to monitor the follicles, and the gynaecologist will decide when to schedule the follicular puncture. At this moment the patient must stop taking all the medication and be given an injection to induce ovulation. Ovulation can be induced by an hCG hormone, a GnRH agonist, or both.
In Vitro Fertilisation
The follicular puncture will take place 36 hours after this medication is given. After the puncture, the ovum will be fertilised with sperm from the selected donor.
Transfer
The embryos can be transferred 5 days after the puncture, or they may be vitrified for transferring in another cycle.
For the transfer of fresh embryos, progesterone must be administered vaginally.
This will begin the night before the puncture and continue until around the 12th week of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Test
The pregnancy test will be carried out 10 to 14 days after transfer.
